Business property damage: what to do and what to gather
Protect what's left, document everything and list what was lost.
If there's any danger from fire, flood, gas or structural damage, call 000 and keep clear.
Do this first
- Make sure everyone is safe
- Take reasonable steps to stop further damage Cover a broken window, move stock away from water. Keep receipts.
- Photograph and film everything before cleaning up or repairing Wide shots and close-ups, with dates if you can.
- Tell your insurer or broker as soon as you can
Who to tell
- Your insurer or broker: Start your claim promptly.
- The police, for theft, vandalism or arson: Keep the report number.
- Your landlord or property manager: If you lease the premises.
What to gather
- Photos or video of the damage. Taken before anything is moved or repaired.
- A list of damaged, lost or stolen items with values. Insurers need a list to assess the claim.
- Receipts, invoices or asset registers. Prove you owned the items and what they cost.
- Police report number, if applicable. Expected for theft.
- Repair or replacement quotes. Your insurer may arrange its own, but quotes help.
Things that catch people out
- Don't throw damaged stock or equipment away until your insurer has seen it or agreed.
- Agree repairs with your insurer first, other than urgent work to stop further damage.
