Car claims
Stolen car: what to do and what to gather
Report it quickly and keep every key, because insurers ask for both.
Report the theft to police straight away. If you see the thief or the car in progress, call 000 and don't confront anyone.
Do this first
- Check where you left it before reporting it stolen A tow, a repossession or a forgotten spot can look like theft.
- Report it to police and get a report number
- Gather every key, including spares and remotes Insurers commonly ask for all keys, and a missing one can affect the claim.
- Tell your insurer as soon as you have the police report number
Who to tell
- The police: Required for a theft claim. Keep the report number.
- Your insurer: Start your claim promptly.
- Your toll provider and local council: So you aren't charged for tolls, fines or fees after it was taken.
What to gather
- Police report number. Insurers need it to process a theft claim.
- Proof you own the car (registration papers or purchase documents). Shows you had an insurable interest in the car.
- All keys, including spares and remotes. Insurers often ask for them to be handed in.
- Where and when you last saw it, and who else had access. The first questions an assessor asks.
- Recent photos of the car. Helps establish its condition and any features.
- A list of modifications and accessories. Aftermarket extras need to be declared and valued.
- Service history and recent receipts. Supports the car's condition and value.
- Finance details, if the car is financed. The lender may need to be paid first.
- A list of anything of yours that was inside. Personal items may be covered separately.
Things that catch people out
- If the car turns up, tell your insurer straight away, before you drive it.
- Don't sell or dispose of anything related to the car until the claim is settled.
- A missing key can complicate a theft claim, so look for every one before you lodge.
