- Photograph the damage, including the whole windscreen
- Check your windscreen excess and whether you must use the insurer's glass repairer Some insurers need approval first.
- Contact your insurer to approve the repair or replacement
Who to tell
- Your insurer or its glass repairer: Many policies need you to claim through them before work starts.
What to gather
- Photos of the damage. Shows the size and position of the chip or crack.
- How and when it happened, if you know. Insurers ask for the cause.
- A photo of the registration plate and whole car. Confirms the vehicle.
- The repair or replacement invoice. If you've already paid and are claiming it back.
Things that catch people out
- Booking a repair before your insurer approves it can leave you paying.
- Some policies treat windscreen claims differently, with a separate excess or no effect on your no-claim bonus. Check yours.
