Accidental damage at home: what to do and what to gather
First check you actually have accidental damage cover, because many policies don't.
Do this first
- Check your policy covers accidental damage It's an optional extra on many policies.
- Stop it getting worse, and keep the damaged item
- Photograph the damage before cleaning or repairing
- Contact your insurer before arranging repairs
Who to tell
- Your insurer: Start your claim promptly.
What to gather
- Confirm your policy includes accidental damage. Without it the claim is likely to be declined.
- Photos of the damage. Shows what was damaged.
- What happened, when and how. Insurers ask for the cause.
- A repair or replacement quote. To assess the cost.
- Receipts or proof of ownership. Supports the value.
- A list of damaged items with values. If more than one item is involved.
Things that catch people out
- Accidental damage cover often excludes wear and tear, pets and gradual damage. Check the wording.
- Keep the damaged item until your insurer says you can dispose of it.
