Do this first

1. Make sure everyone is safe
2. Photograph everything before cleaning up or repairing
3. Contact your insurer before arranging repairs

Who to tell

• Your insurer: Start your claim promptly.
• The police: If a crime was involved.

What to gather

• Photos of the damage or loss. Shows what happened.
• Date and what happened. Every claim starts with this.
• A list of affected items with values. For contents.
• A repair quote. Helps assess the cost.

Things that catch people out

• Don't authorise major repairs until your insurer agrees.
