Flight or travel delay: what to do and what to gather
Get the delay in writing, and keep receipts for what you had to buy.
Do this first
- Ask the airline or provider for written confirmation of the delay The cause and how long it lasted.
- Ask what the airline will provide first Meals, accommodation or rebooking.
- Keep receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation and transport
- Contact your insurer

- The airline or provider: To get written confirmation and ask what they'll cover.
- Your insurer: Start your claim promptly.
What to gather
- Written confirmation of the delay, its cause and its length. Cover usually starts after a minimum delay.
- Your booking and itinerary. Shows what you were due to do.
- Receipts for extra costs. Meals, accommodation and transport.
- What the airline provided or paid. Insurers pay what the airline didn't.
- Receipts for alternative transport. If you had to rebook.
Things that catch people out
- Most policies only pay after a minimum delay, so check the number of hours.
- Keep spending reasonable. Insurers can decline extravagant costs.
